A Disability Group Home is a shared home or accommodation for people living with a disability, mental illness, or a health condition that requires additional support. Our homes promote independence as our professionals are present to provide 24/7 assistance and support. Disability Group Homes are designed to create a sense of a safe community and inclusion.
There are different types of Disability Group Homes tailored to support individual needs and levels of support. Here’s your quick guide to the options available:
Our high-intensity support homes are designed for those with complex medical needs and severe disabilities. Our staff is available on-site 24/7 in these homes. They are typically single-story facilities containing specialised medical equipment for facilitated support and a team of healthcare professionals available to meet the residents’ needs. Residents usually have private rooms or share bedroom units with other residents, depending on their requirements.
Special Needs Group Homes are designed for individuals who require higher levels of supervision but don’t require intensive medical support. Private rooms or shared bedrooms are also a common characteristic of Special Needs Group Homes. These homes can also be single-story houses, units or villas.
Group Homes for Seniors are designed for elderly adults who require assistance with their day-to-day activities but are still able to maintain some independence. These homes offer an element of community for adults, whilst providing services such as meal preparation, medication management and housekeeping. Group Homes for Seniors can be single-story houses or apartment-style units.
These group homes accommodate care and support for children and young adults with a variety of needs. Their support extends to children in the foster care system or with behavioural challenges. They vary in size and layout, but are typically characterised by multiple bedrooms or units to accommodate a higher number of residents.
Public and Community Housing is for individuals with lower levels of medical and support requirements. These houses are typically equipped with modifications, including accessible bathrooms and entrance ramps to promote independence. Residents commonly share spaces whilst maintaining an aspect of their privacy for their daily activities.
Our homes proudly accommodate a range of individuals with varying needs or requirements for additional support. We support:
We also offer support for families going through the SDA journey. At 24/7 Care Disability, we aim to make the process less overwhelming by simplifying it for you.
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) refers to Disability Group Homes, which are purpose-built and designed for individuals with high support needs. Support Independent Living (SIL) focuses on giving individuals access to independence, usually in a shared living environment. This support is usually more focused on helping an individual with personal care, chores and developing social skills. There are funding options available for both. You can learn more about the different funding options available to you by speaking to our team.
The NDIS will cover a large portion of the property costs, although the amount of your funding can vary depending on several factors, including: location of the property, on-site overnight assistance offered, building type (i.e apartments, townhouses), and SDA care category.
However, the individual living in SDA will need to cover rent, which is also known as the Reasonable Rent Contribution. This will be a reduced amount, calculated based on a percentage of the Disability Support Pension (DSP). Day-to-day living expenses such as groceries and phone bills are also expected to be covered by the individual.
The application process looks different depending on the evidence you are required to submit. You will be required to complete Functional Capacity Assessments, statements and other forms of evidence. As your application is then reviewed and necessary support is established for you, depending on your needs, the entire process can take anywhere from three to seven months.
